Jacob Badl “earned” sciatica at his trade expeditions, which at that time took place in postal or business carriages. He would often stop and enjoy the benefits of thermal water in Krapinske Toplice, and his health condition had significantly improved. Therefore, he decided to buy the existing springs and thus enable faster recovery for other people as well. In 1859, Badl demolished the old baths, laid the foundation stone for the “Kurhaus” – the building where today's hospital is located, and in 1862, he opened a swimming pool – Mary's Bath; the pool was one meter deep and nine meters high from the surface to the ceiling. He completed the construction of the bathing home and baths as early as in 1866, and turned Toplice into a fashionable European spa and health resort.

He named the baths after himself and his wife – Jacb's and Mary's baths, and today they are part of the Special Hospital for Medical Rehabilitation Krapinske Toplice. Jacob's bath, which is available to the public, is filled with water directly from the spring through the spread oak covers. The water temperature at the spring is 41°C.
