Trees have always been associated with human life. Trees are an important part of the natural landscape due to the production of oxygen and the reduction of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. They serve as a source of food, protection, recreation, erosion prevention, etc. They have many different orders and families of plants. Members of the Zagorje Trail Mountaineering Association from Zabok also realized the importance of trees in people's lives. In 2005, they bought and arranged the land in the vicinity of Zabok, made a preliminary design of the Picelj Educational Park. Through the project they established cooperation with the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Areas of Nature, Krapina-Zagorje County, the City of Zabok and the A.G. Matoš grammar school to start a planned planting of autochthonous Zagorje trees and shrubs on 60 plots.
Today, the Picelj Education Park is a member of the section in the category of botanical collections of the Croatian Botanical Society. In the park you can find maple, yew, Austrian oak, larch, birch, linden, hawthorn, chestnut, mulberries, dogwood, medlar, hornbeam, oak and many other trees and shrubs typical of Zagorje.
